Genres

Hi love the program

i would like for the genres to add the parents genre automatically. e.g i have Adventure, Horror etc.. under Fiction so if i add Horror to a book i would like Fiction to be added as well and the same for sub-sub-genres etc... e.g i have Fiction-Fantasy-Paranormal-Vampires so i can just add vampires to a book and all the sub genres will be added also.

Also i don't know if this is a bug because i don't know what the number means and i am guessing it is how many book in that genre but, in the Library Explorer genre side panel i only have 2 Fiction books but the number in the brackets is 10, the 2 books in there do have multiple Fiction sub-genres set, 5 each. so i think it is counting each sub-genre as a different book. it is the same for the sub-genres that have sub-sub-genres and so on...

Thanks

Ciáron

Hi Ciaron,
Yes, for now the parent genre shows the number of books in child genres, but doesn't show all books in child genres. That's how most our users required it to work. We are considering making Genres flat (as Tags or Authors), so that they were simple and could fit most users

Hi

ahh. OK thats fine. do you mean 'flat' as in getting rid of the parent/child system for genres, because that is the main reason i use Alfa. haven't found it on the few book organizers i have tried out.

yes, flat means without parent/child. But this is just an idea for now. The benefit is much more simple genre management
So, could you let us know why tree genre structure is so important for you and flat list can't replace it?

OCD and neatness of it. i like grouping genres together, e.g having the parent genre paranormal and child genres vampire, ghosts, etc... and having paranormal under fantasy along with urban fantasy, low fantasy, high fantasy etc... and then all of them under fiction. in a flat system, alphabetically all of these genres would be all over the place and not together.

i know i could name genres like fiction-fantasy-paranormal-vampire etc.. but this can get convoluted and the name can get very long if you have a lot of sub groups, which i do.

basically i like to categorize genres :)
